Voice of My Own
Voice Of My Own tells the inspiring true story of Daniel Jillings, the Lowestoft D/deaf teenager who campaigned for the British Sign Language GCSE. From the Suffolk coast to the steps of Parliament, Daniel’s remarkable story is one of courage, resilience and the power of youth to create change.
Despite being a language for over 500 years, British Sign Language was only legally recognised by Parliament in 2022. Banned from education systems globally in 1880, the UK Government announced the introduction of a British Sign Language GCSE in 2023. Voice Of My Own tells the Suffolk origins of this national movement in a celebration of Deaf culture, using integrated captions and bilingual performances placing Deaf issues centre stage.
Despite knowing that the GCSE would come too late for his own studies, Daniel’s determination to be able to access education in his own language has transformed the system for future generations.
This brand-new play written by Eloise Pennycott is a universal story of self-discovery and finding your voice in a world full of noise happening in the 30th anniversary year of the Disability Discrimination Act.
